Open rhinoplasty Vs. Closed Rhinoplasty
The difference between open and closed Rhinoplasty is one small incision
that makes a huge difference for the surgeon.
In an “open rhinoplasty” an incision across the columella makes it possible
for the Doctor to lift the skin off the tip of the nose and shape the
cartilage very precisely by having your nose basically “open”. Most
top rhinoplasty surgeons feel this is the best
option because there is an advantage in that the skeleton (cartilage and
bone) is exposed and directly visible to them.
Open rhinoplasty has become the more popular and preferred version by
facial plastic surgeons in recent
times due to the benefits it offers. Yet patients are often deterred from
this technique due to that when healed, the incision leaves a very small
almost unnoticeable scar on the underside of the nose. Although when the
procedure is done properly, this will in fact offer no aesthetic issue.
With a “closed rhinoplasty” not as much freedom is offered as the
incision is inside the nostril. The modifications during the procedure are
under the skin therefore giving the surgeon less access and visibility.
Patients lean toward this technique since the small scar will not exist.
However, the advantages in the open rhinoplasty in terms of your results
should outweigh the risk of miniscule scarring.
Dr Simoni is skilled in both open and closed rhinoplasty, however Dr will most likely have a preference of open when tip refinement is needed. Dr Payman Simoni favors closed rhinoplasty when no or only minor tip work is needed.
